A description of your school:
Ananda School outside Nevada City, California, is a private school, grades K-8, dedicated to the principles of Education for Life. Ananda School has been in continuous existence since its establishment in 1972. Located in the intentional community, Ananda Village, students and teachers have access to over 700 acres of woodlands and meadows for their studies.

The school, located on two campuses, has six classrooms, a computer lab, a gym, and a library. From the junior high campus students have a view of the Sutter Buttes in one direction and the snow-covered high Sierras in the other.The elementary campus is bordered by an apple orchard and features a beautiful organic garden.

The school has sixty-two students; class size averages about ten, although the junior high (seventh-eighth grades) has twenty-two students. There are two full-time teachers and three elective teachers for these 22 students. We teach all subjects, in a thematic approach. Character education is an important part of our curriculum. Our elementary students attend school from 8:30 to 2:30, and our junior high from 8:30 to 3:00. We have a grassy field for the tennis ball throw. Our track and long jump course are dirt, but newly graded and sanded.

A description of your community
Our community is an intentional community of 400 people on 700 acres in the rural Sierra Nevada foothills. We are a community founded in 1969. We have businesses, roads, our own water system, a market, and a schools. Our businesses are varied: everything from the Ananda Collection, which sells meditation equipment and crafts to the Expanding Light, a yoga retreat, to Ananda Power Technology, which specializes in solar power switching equipment. We also have a Builder's Guild and two publishing companies, Dawn and Crystal Clarity. We have all types of housing from single-family homes to duplexes to shared housing. Our most popular weekly event is pizza night at our Market, every Friday evening. People order their pizza or buy by the slice and socialize. In cool weather we build a fire outside; in the summer people play volleyball. Our most popular annual event is difficult to determine: we have the annual Christmas Eve service, the annual county open house, the annual Easter Egg hunt, so many popular events. The Fourth of July is a great event that attracts visitors from our surrounding area. Please include such things as size/type of community (city, rural) population, and the most popular attraction/event in your community.
